knowledge is POWER

Friday Night Live is the original prevention program that began in 1984 as a pilot program dedicated to reduce the number of teen deaths caused by teens driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs. It is the program from which Club Live and Friday Night Live Kids evolved.

Friday Night Live is a youth driven and youth led prevention program for high school students that works! It is a peer program designed to build partnerships for positive and healthy youth development, which engage youth as active leaders and resources in their communities. Friday Night Live provides positive, high-energy alternative activities, promotes alcohol and drug-free lifestyles, and develops leadership skills among teenagers.

So what does that mean?
Friday Night Live is a shared venture between high school age students and adult allies. Friday Night Live is a program developed by the youth for the issues they deem necessary. Rather than young people passively acting on what adult administrators tell them to do, youth are the core teachers and administrators of their own programs. The adults act as a support system to the students by providing resources, and the basic framework. However, it is the youth that are the driving force in Friday Night Live.

Research clearly shows that when young people are in places rich in opportunities and supports they are less likely to engage in problem behaviors, more likely to achieve in school, and more likely to attend higher education or secure a full time job. However, research also clearly shows that even the best program will be useless if the youth will not stick around long enough to take advantage of it. Which is why Friday Night live has adopted the motto of 75% FUN and 25% message. As a result youth join for the fun, and stay to learn skills that empower them to live full and productive lives alcohol and drug free. Friday Night Live has adopted the quote by an anonymous source, “I kept looking for somebody to solve the problem, and then I realized: I am somebody”. This quote has found meaning with the Friday Night Live members as Friday Night Live can fill the gaps left by weakened family and community networks and help the youth to see that they are the somebody.

What do Friday Night Live Members do?
Participates in Friday Night Live will build social connections with members and meet teens from across the county through service projects, conferences, activities, and events such as Teenwork. TeenWork is the largest teen conference California. The California Youth Council, together with adult allies, plans and implements the entire four-day program and every workshop is presented or facilitated by youth.

Of course being a Friday Night Live member also means FUN. The members of Friday Night Live know how to have a good time! Friday Night Live chapters organize dances, haunted houses, sober grad events, 24 hour relays, all night lock-ins at pizza places, and countless other activities.

Friday Night Live members also make positive changes in their school and community. They have the opportunity to speak to city officials on issues that affect them. Friday Night Live empowers its members. Friday Night Live members will see negative things in their community and learn the skills to take action for change; rather than just feeling powerless and thinking “Well, I can’t do anything about it”.

Members also participate in community service, and some participate in mentoring activities. Their participation in community service provide opportunities for young people to engage in ongoing, mutually beneficial, caring relationships that strengthen them to face today's challenges.

All are welcome in Friday Night Live, join today and see what you have been missing.
