FNL
Kids Brief History
Kern Countys Friday Night Live Kids program began in
1995 with two schools and has grown to become one of the most
active programs in the FNL family. Currently, there are 15
active chapters and there have been as many as 25 active chapters
at one time. Throughout the county, these chapters are busy
doing community service projects, planning school-wide events
(celebrations, educational campaigns, and other activities),
participating in countywide functions (FNL family sports nights,
leadership trainings, etc.), and conducting their own executive
committee and general meetings for their school (usually 2-4
per month) and still remember that the program should be 75%
FUN and 25% work.
The key to the success of the program is to have a dedicated
adult ally, a.k.a. Advisor. The role of the Advisor is to
be the Guide on the side and to allow the chapter
to be youth-driven and led. When this occurs,
true leadership and youth development will take place and
the Advisor and members will realize the full potential of
the FNL Kids program. Also important to note is that this
program should be inclusive to all and exclusive to
none, this means an open-door policy, i.e.: anyone
in the grade levels mentioned should be able to join at any
time during the school year. Membership should always be flexible.
