FNL
Mentoring Overview:
In 1998, the California Friday Night Live Partnership developed
and implemented a mentoring component into the existing Friday
Night Live (FNL) program. Friday Night Live Mentoring started
with five pilot counties throughout the state of California.
After only two years of working with the pilot programs it
was expanded into 26 Friday Night Live counties. Friday Night
Live Mentoring is starting its third year in Kern County.
Friday Night Live mentoring is a cross age mentoring program
that builds positive relationships between high school aged
mentors and middle school aged protégés. Friday
Night Live Cross age mentors assist younger students to develop
life skills, accomplish specific goals, learn conflict resolution
skills, develop positive coping skills, and alcohol, tobacco
and drug prevention. Both mentors and protégés
make a year long commitment to the program. They meet once
a week for 90-minute sessions for 22 weeks. The mentors also
participate in the countywide FNL events throughout the school
year.
FNL Mentoring provides opportunities for young people to
be in an ongoing, mutually beneficial, and caring relationships
that strengthen a young persons resiliency to the challenges
they face in life.
