I started the official Kern County Friday Night Live
program in 1989, though there were three Pioneer
Chapters that came before me. I have been privileged
to work with dedicated youth and adults to bring FNL
from a Dont Drink and Drive high school movement
to one that teaches resiliency and life skills to youth
in order to enable them to become more successful adults.
Together with a group of junior high school students
and some very enthusiastic Advisors, I began one of
the first Club Live Chapters in the state. These students
helped give it a name and a logo. We have also implemented
FNL Kids and FNL Mentoring. I believe in the power of
young people and also believe that training the adults
who support them is essential to helping or communities
grow and prosper from the partnership between youth
and adults.
Friday Night Live is a program of the Kern County Department
of Mental Health. The Kern County Friday Night Live
Partnership exists because of collaborations between
Kern County Mental Health, the Kern County Superintendent
of Schools, Bakersfield City School district, Kern High
School District and many other agencies and organizations.
We have strong support from area businesses and organizations
that believe in our mission to help youth become problem
free and fully prepared for what lies ahead.
I am amazed at what great things can occur when adults
work to provide training and empowerment to youth. I
appreciate wholly the dedication of our Advisors who
give their time and talent to help youth in a way that
is different from teaching and is every bit as important.
